What's inside the "Black Box"? Using data models to explain ERP systems

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications such as SAP are quickly being deployed within our organizations. Although we can master how to get data in and out of these packages, most of us have no clue what is happening inside the "Black Box".  Data models can illuminate the complexities within the Black Box, providing a level of understanding that aids integration and impact analysis.

We'll explore ERP promises and dig deeper to uncover the five focus areas within ERP. Then we'll learn how a combination of subject area, logical, and physical data models can address each of these focus areas. I will use a real life case study to illustrate the benefits of an SAP Classifications subject area model. Next we'll examine the contributions from an ERP logical and physical data model. Then we'll roll up our sleeves and actually practice building an ERP model.

In this session you will

v     Recognize the five focus areas necessary for ERP success

v     Appreciate the non-traditional use of data modeling as purely a communication tool

v     Decide on the ideal level of granularity (Subject area, logical, or physical) for an ERP focus area

v     Review the steps required to produce an ERP model

v     Discover the actual benefits derived from ERP modeling

v     Practice modeling a subset of an ERP application
