Graeme will look at some of the most important issues in data modeling, and offer his forthright – and sometimes controversial – views. For example:
- Is data modeling analysis or design?
- Do we need professional data modelers?
- How can we convince others of the need for data modeling?
- What other professions can we learn from?
- What should our deliverables be?
- What should the role of the user / business specialist be?
- What are the respective roles of data modeler and database designer?
The material will provide a preview of some of the key ideas in the forthcoming third edition of Data Modeling Essentials and summarize early results from his research on “Choice and Creativity in Data Modeling”. There will be opportunity for questions and discussion.
After spending his early career as a database administrator, Graeme established a specialist data management consultancy which he grew to some seventy staff, while expanding its scope to include systems planning, business process design and systems specification. As the business grew, Graeme continued to consult, working largely with senior business managers. He sold the business in 1999 and since completing two-year handover, has been undertaking research in data modeling at the University of Melbourne.
Graeme is a regular presenter at industry conferences, and has been a keynote speaker at DAMA conferences on five occasions, as well as undertaking several tours of DAMA chapters.
