This presentation will take a quick look back at the historical origins of data
warehousing before data warehousing became a unique subspecialty within
information systems. It will summarize the author's experiences in data
warehousing, including his lessons learned, perspectives on best practices, and
opinions regarding the most popular writers and authors in the field today. The
presentation will cover a range of topics necessary for success within data
warehousing including technical, cultural, organizational, and leadership
issues.
Dale Sanders is Vice President of Information Services and CIO
of the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, associated with the
Northwestern University Healthcare System in Chicago, Illinois. From 1997
through 2004, Dale worked at Intermountain Health Care where he was the
Regional Director of Information Systems and Medical Informatics at LDS
Hospital. While at IHC, he was the chief architect of the IHC Enterprise Data
Warehouse, recipient of five national awards for contributions to healthcare
quality and cost reduction. He co-founded the Healthcare Data Warehousing
Association in 2001. His background includes eight years as an information
systems consultant and Vice President of Information Technology International.
His customers included Intel, Motorola, IBM, the National Security Agency, and
others. From 1983 through 1989, he was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force where he
specialized in the battle management and decision support systems associated
with strategic nuclear warfare. He was named "Information Systems Officer of
the Year" in 1986. He has a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology and a
certificate of Information Systems Engineering from the U.S. Air Force.
